Mijajlović as a political prisoner?!

Besides, he is not allowed to have telephone calls with his immediate family and is not allowed a medical examination of his injured shoulder at the Clinical Center, the detained businessman Aleksandar Mijajlović, who has a history of cardiovascular problems, has not been granted improved living conditions in his detention cell in Spuž by the administration of the Investigation Prison. All of this information, as well as the daily personal attacks by Democrats officials Aleksa Bečić and Boris Bogdanović, has evidently influenced the investigating judge Goran Šćepanović, as well as the administration of the Investigation Prison.

On the day when the Council of the Supreme Court extended Aleksandar Mijajlović’s detention for another three months, the Podgorica businessman received confirmation that the administration of the Investigation Prison will do nothing to improve the conditions of his detention in Spuž.

According to information from Television E, Mijajlović, since October 3, has been in a detention cell with seven other detainees. Although the Podgorica businessman has a history of cardiovascular disease, the administration of the Investigation Prison did not take this into account, so apart from one-hour daily walks, he spends his detention time in a room where everyone except him are heavy smoker.

DETENTION CONDITIONS

On Mijajlović’s request, the administration of the Investigation Prison did not react for a long time, until yesterday, when he was finally called in for a discussion with Vladimir Šćepanović, the head of the Investigation Prison.

Although Chief Šćepanović, in the presence of his assistant, received Mijajlović for a discussion, it turned out that there was no willingness to change anything regarding the existing detention conditions. The Chief just stated that the only thing he could offer was solitary confinement, without the possibility of watching television?!

These are mostly detention conditions that are imposed as a form of punishment for violating prison discipline.

This is not the only signal of the poor treatment of the Podgorica businessman. Television E reported that Mijajlović, who has been in the Administration for the Execution of Criminal

Sanctions (UIKS) since October 3, has not been allowed telephone contact with his family. Our media was informed by the UIKS administration that permission for monitored calls from a telephone booth is granted by the investigating judge of the High Court, Goran Šćepanović.

Although last year, in the case of Mijajlović’s detention, the same judge granted permission for him to contact his family after only seven days, now - despite 88 days having passed since his stay in Spuž - Šćepanović persistently refuses to issue such permission.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

Aleksandar Mijajlović was arrested in early 2024 on suspicion of being part of an organized criminal group involved in cigarette smuggling, but after more than two months, he was released to defend himself while at liberty on bail of 1.1 million euros. Although in that case the High Court considered that there was no risk of flight or influence on witnesses, now both the High Court and the Supreme Court have assessed that there is a possibility of influencing witnesses and a risk of flight?!

There are other approaches: last year, immediately after Mijajlović’s detention, the same judge granted permission for him to contact his family after only seven days. Now - despite 88 days having passed since his stay in Spuž—Šćepanović persistently refuses to issue permission for even a single daily call to his family?!

At the same time, someone clearly made sure that Mijajlović does not receive dignified treatment within UIKS. In addition to the conditions in the detention cell, for more than 60 days, the businessman is waiting for approval to undergo an X-ray of his injured shoulder at the Clinical Center of Montenegro, even though a doctor from UIKS determined that such imaging is necessary.

Evidently: the proposal for an emergency examination at the Clinical Center is deliberately ignored. It is difficult to explain what motives, other than political ones, led the judges of the High Court to deny permission for a hospital visit for a shoulder examination.

Judging by the treatment so far, it appears that Aleksandar Mijajlović is a kind of political prisoner.
